GRAMMAR ( SIMPLE AND BASIC TENSES OF VERBS)

Function of a verb : To tell us WHEN the action is taking place.

There are THREE main verbs :

  • Past tense
  • Present tense
  • Future tense
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • Past tense

--> To express the idea that an action started and finished at
a specific time in the past.

--> Examples of specific time : - yesterday
                                                   - last night
                                                   - just now
                                                   - a few minutes ago

Usually, { For regular verb},you add (-ed) or (-d) to the end of the verb.

               ~ watch --- watched

               ~  move --- move

               ~ walk   --- walked

                  1. Yesterday, the children played in the garden happily.

However, { For irregular verb}, you CANNOT add (-ed) or (-d) to the end of the verb.

In fact, they don't end in anything in particular.

That is hard to you as a student to remember how to form their past tense. When in doubt, look it up in the dictionary.

If you always do grammar exercises, you will see and remember which verbs are regular or irregular verbs ! :)

                ~    go    --- went

                ~   eat    --- ate

                ~  begin  --- began

                       1. Last night, my sister went to market.

  • Present tense

--> To express the idea that an action is repeated or usual
    (habitual,fact,routine,a scheduled event)

--> We use everyday,at 8 am, every night to show time in present tense.

-->Usually, we add (+s) to the end of the verb { For singular subject}, whereas we can't add (-s) to then end of the verb
{ For plural subject}

They play in the garden happily every evening.

My sister goes to the market at 2.00 pm every Wednesday.

  • Future tense

--> To show the action is going to happen.

--> We use tomorrow, next week, tomorrow morning to show future tense.

--> Usually, we express by placing will/shall + base form.

Tomorrow, they will play in the garden.

My sister will go to market after cooking.
